What you should know about the wheelchair access at the orange gates in Kyoto

I went to Fushimi Inari Taisha with my Mum. I really wanted to see it. This is my guide.

Getting there

We travelled with JR from Kyoto Station to Inari Station. It has a ramp and elevator access.

The experience

There was no clear way to get to the gates. We went up and down and around. A lot of it was uphill and I needed help. I found the downhill scary because it was quite steep.

One part has steps but they are thin and spaced. We were able to go up and down them ok. A local tourist offered help.

It wasn’t too busy being winter.

I would recommend seeing it once. It helps to have someone willing to help with the hills and stairs.

Resources

I used the Accessible Japan guide to plan our trip.

Google maps was helpful too.
