How Spark Joy changed my life

I’ve been finding life tough. I’m disabled, unemployed and living alone in a big city.

A friend introduced me to Spark Joy. We had been talking about the concept for a few weeks then one day while I was out shopping I decided to buy Spark Joy by Marie Kondo. I bought the hard cover with it’s pretty white and blue fish scale-like patterns and gold font. The content covered how to declutter and organise your home but also so much more than that. It’s about surrounding yourself with things you love to change your whole life.

I couldn’t put the book down as soon as I started reading it. It only took me a few days to complete. It is a guide but written in such a beautiful way that you don’t feel threatened. Feeling empowered I took on the advice and began my journey.

I began to declutter asking myself ‘Does this spark joy?’ If it did then I kept it but if it didn’t then I thanked it for once bringing joy into my life and wished it well on its journey to spark joy for others. I ended up with six bags that I took in two trips to my local Vinnies.

I then went on to find a place for the things that did spark joy. I really enjoyed folding my clothes using the Maria Kondo method and I liked the way things were beginning to look.

I now have a greater appreciation of what I would like to change, what I do have and what does spark joy in my life.

I will continue to live by the concept of Spark Joy.
